Ordering Process

My M-Series wooden skeleton clocks are one of a kind commissioned projects, serialized and signed.  Normally the client has a specific design in mind but, a limited number of stock clock designs can be produced. See the Clock Gallery.

Often the client wants a clock that fits into the home decor or one to match a particular style of furniture, ie., Stickley, Greene and Greene, etc.  In any case, the process involves 5 simple steps.

1. We collaborate   (Contact Max)  to establish and finalize the desired clock design. I provide sketches of the design decisions. Here's a pdf sample drawing of the M4 Clock. This process volleys back and forth and often continues even as the clock is being built. I like to communicate and refine your ideas during the build to ensure you're happy with the final product.

2. You determine what species of wood you desire for the individual clock components. Included in this decision is the material for the hanging weights. I prefer to use natural materials such as river bed stones. The current drive train requires approximately 30 pounds of weight. This can be adjusted down with modifications to the escapement design (made smaller) and, accordingly, shortening the pendulum.

3. You select the type of finish you want on your clock. I prefer and recommend hand rubbed tung oil but, other finishes can be applied. No finish is applied to the teeth of the gears. Doing so would cause friction and affect the clock performance.

4. I send periodic updates to apprasie progress on your clock and get your inputs and approval on any changes.

5. I test the final clock until I'm satisfied with its performance and then ship (or hand deliver!) the clock to your home.  The setup might require a phone call conversation to ensure proper adjustments are made. Note: If you're living in the New England area, I can and will drive to your home and set the clock up for you. This requires a good bottle of red wine and your warm company!

Note: I like to incorporate reclaimed woods and any other objects of personal value into clock designs. For example, a client had reclaimed some Walnut from an old tree taken down on his property.  That Walnut was used to build his heirloom clock! Another client had an old medallion that was incorporated into a pendulum bob.
